The raw beauty of "The Treason of Consciousness," ODIOUS SPIRIT's debut album from 2024, was a significant hint of the wonders to come, which duly arrive with the band's sophomore effort, "The Sourceless Scourge." The brainchild of James Oskarbski, a talented guitarist from Poughkeepsie, NY, ODIOUS SPIRIT are builders of grandiose sonic architecture that exist in perfect balance between technical thrash-death metal and minimalist avant-garde. Their music is an impossible cross between VOIVOD, IMMOLATION, KRALLICE, and Mick Barr's OCRILIM, as demonstrated by the intense 40-minute "The Sourceless Scourge," divided into five long and vertiginous tracks.
Oskarbski isn't alone in this endeavor: the excellent bassist Cullen Gallagher (already appreciated on the band's previous album) and the extraordinary drummer Jason Bursese (THANATOTHERION, BLACK FUCKING CANCER) punctuate Oskarbski's guitar work and his almost mantric death metal growls, vibrating in unison with them. In particular, Bursese really adds an extra edge to the music thanks to ever-new and exciting rhythmic solutions, transforming the band into a killing machine. ODIOUS SPIRIT's is a hypnotic wall of sound that leaves the listeners stunned by its heaviness and complexity of forms, but equally eager to uncover its secret mechanisms with each new listen.
Mixed by Kevin Bernsten and expertly mastered by James Plotkin (KHANATE), "The Sourceless Scourge" perhaps finds its pinnacle in the monumental "Close to Sun" and "Temporal Euthanasia," where ODIOUS SPIRIT alternate lethal mid-tempos with devastating thrash/death metal rides, with Oskarbski's frenetic, dissonant guitar launching into pulsating, trance-inducing loops in crescendo, perfectly intertwined with Bursese and Gallagher's ingenious rhythmic counterpoints. These days, it's hard to find anything as fresh and surprising, and Jari Anttonen's enigmatic cover art highlights the uniqueness of a project worthy of attention.
